Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Management
The clinic of anaesthesiology of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich is one of the largest departments of its kind in Europe. With currently more than 220 physicians employed, including six professors of anaesthesiology it offers services in the area of anesthesiology, intensive care, acute and chronic pain therapy and emergency medicine.

The department carries out more than 45,000 anaesthesia cases for all types of surgery every year. This includes specialized services for cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, thorax surgery, paediatric surgery and a whole variety of transplant surgery. The department also carries the responsibility for a large number of intensive care beds (currently more than 48 beds), which includes specialized intensive care units for neurosurgery, cardiac surgery and liver, lung and heart transplantations.
An additional strength are the services provided for acute and chronic pain therapy, where specialists provide a round-the-clock postoperative care program and a highly renowned pain clinic. The pain therapists also participate in an interdisciplinary terminal care unit for palliative care medicine.

Moreover the department is responsible for providing an interdisciplinary emergency care service where physicians offer 24-hour services using two rapid intervention cars and one helicopter unit for the City of Munich.
During its regular five-year training program each junior member of the department rotates through all the various departments of the clinic of anaesthesiology including a full year in the intensive care units. Specialized fellowships can be arranged for any subspeciality which may be of interest to possible applicants.

- Sepsis
- Microcirculatory disorders
- Mechanisms of chronic pain
- Patient monitoring
Since a specialized rotation in the departments research laboratories is also available corresponding fellowships or observation programs can be arranged.
