Cardiac Surgery

The Department of Cardiac Surgery performs about 2000 open heart procedures per year. It is headed by Professor Dr. Bruno Reichart, who became successor of Professor Dr. Christian Barnard in Cape Town, before accepting his appointment at the University of Munich.

In the five operating theatres the full spectrum of cardiac surgery is offered such as:

  • Coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Valve surgery (including reconstructions and homograft implantations)
  • Surgery of the aorta
  • Thoracic transplantations
  • Implantation of artificial hearts
  • Pacemaker and defibrillator implantations
  • Every type of intervention for congenital heart diseases

Specializing in minimally-invasive cardiac surgery and using most advanced high-tech equipment including robots, many procedures are now carried out without the support of the cardio-pulmonary bypass machine. Advanced imaging technology allows for a precise planning of even very complex surgery particularly useful in con-genital heart diseases.

The department is home to one of the largest German transplant programs which cover heart, lung, heart-lung and also paediatric transplantations. The variety of assisted devices available and the two large interdisciplinary intensive care units allow for successful high end cardiac surgery.

The many research programs focus on:

  • Assist devices
  • Xenotransplantation
  • Immunology for transplantation
  • Neurocognitive consequences of cardiac surgery

We invite you to join this young and dynamic team to receive your training in cardiac surgery in Munich.
