Emergency Medicine

The first German doctor based ambulance service was established in Munich in the
1960s. This has resulted in the establishment of a center of excellence for trauma
care at LMU Munich. On average a doctor is currently on the site of an accident
in less than seven minutes. This is due to a very efficient response system and
a proficient training scheme of all physicians participating in the service. Emergency
medicine in Germany is carried out in an interdisciplinary approach, directly
involving all sub-specialties.
Every program participant will become part of the trauma team and thus can benefit
from the high skill set available from this service.

Characteristics of the Emergency Service:
- Full EMS programs staffed by two physicians
- One hospital-based EMS (Helicopter program)
- Special physician-staffed trauma management
- Recovery at scene of accident and initial management
- Transportation
- Emergency room management
- Primary and secondary surgical treatment
- Specific intensive trauma care
