Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology/Diabetes

The Department of Internal Medicine II is a large center of academic medicine and clinical research focusing on Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology/ Diabetes. The department offers clinical fellowships (9-12 month) and observerships (1-2 month). Structure, duration and curriculum will vary according to the individual’s career aspirations. The programs are designed to provide the most comprehensive clinical experience by developing the trainee’s clinical skills and expertise in a specific area of clinical investigation. In all subspecialties offered by the department, a specialty observer-ship can be arranged.

Clinical Fellowship in Gastroenterology:

The aim of the fellowship is acquisition of state-of-the art knowledge and skills in gastroenterology and the associated imaging diagnostic specialties and therapeutic interventions. Fellows will participate in advanced levels of clinical care in the inpatient-service, bedside and didactic teaching, consultation and collaboration with members of the gastroenterology team. In addition, fellows will have a two-month teaching program in the out-patient service and a two-month program in the large endoscopy unit. An elective block also allows fellows to select a month-long experience in a subspecialty like emergency medicine, intensive care, surgery or radiology.

The department also offers the possibility of clinical research programs with prospects for collaboration in clinical investigations and the opportunity to present findings at national meetings. Exercises in teaching and learning are conducted at frequent multidisciplinary conferences, journal clubs, and numerous teaching sessions within the speciality area.

Fellowship in Hepatology:

The design of the fellowship in hepatology is a high proportion of time spent in the out-patient services for viral hepatitis, autoimmune disorders and choles-tatic diseases as well as a comprehensive teaching program for diagnostic and therapeutic intervention (liver biopsy, magnetic resonance imaging, CT-scan guided biopsy, TIPS, chemoembolisation of HCC). In addition, fellows will gain a large experience in the liver transplantion service including screening, surgical aspects, long-term follow-up and immunosuppression. Exercises in teaching and learning are conducted at frequent multidisciplinary conferences, journal clubs, and numerous teaching sessions within the specialty area.

Clinical Fellowship in Endocrinology/Diabetes Unit:

The main purpose of the clinical fellowship is acquisition of state-of-the art knowledge and skills in diagnosis and therapy of patients with endocrinology disorders or diabetes. Fellows will participate in advanced levels of clinical care, bedside and didactic teaching, consultation and collaboration with members of the health care team. Exercises are conducted at conferences, within journal clubs, and numerous interdisciplinary sessions within the specialty area.

Summer School for Women Training in Gastroenterology:

As a special service, the Department of Internal Medicine II has developed a four week summer school focusing on clinical training in gastroenterology for female
physicians. The aim of the program is to offer a high standard of clinical education for an underestimated field of women´s health. Participants will follow an intense curriculum based on lectures, case discussion and journal clubs and will also have multidisciplinary training session for clinical and technical skills required.
In addition, an interdisciplinary lecture program will cover important aspects of women´s health, psychology, gender studies, preventive medicine and medical history.
