Faculty Development: University of Maribor

In October 2005, Munich Medical International organized a two day "teach the teacher" program for 40 professors at the Medical Faculty of the University of Maribor, Slovenia. The program was highly successful and has been evaluated by the participants with very good results (see the following PDFfile)

The Medical Faculty of the University of Maribor was founded with the act of the reorganization of the University of Maribor passed by the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia on October 2, 2003. The founding of the Faculty represents an institutional basis for the further development of educational and scientific research activities in the field of medical science within the University of Maribor.

The founding of the Medical Faculty and the implementation of medical studies are developmental priorities of the University of Maribor, belonging to the broader sphere of a supplement to the educational tender and scientific research activities under the auspices of the new faculty and study programs. Educating home staff in various fields of science is essential for a strong national identity and the prerequisite for an equivalent and competitive position of Slovene intellectuals in the European and broader international intellectual space. This has additionally gained more importance since the entry of the Republic of Slovenia into the European Union in the year 2004.

The development of medical sciences in the geographic region by the state border will certainly contribute to the fortification of national intellectual potentials.

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Maribor in Slovenia faces many challenges in the near future. First goal is the qualitative realisation of an undergraduate study program, which is internationally comparable. The program allows students and professors to exchange within other European Medical Faculties.

One of the first achievements of this new Faculty of Medicine was the successful development of a postgraduate study program "Biomedical Technology". The program started in autumn 2005.

The priorities for the future are teaching excellence, international distinguished research and scholarship, and effective knowledge transfer. The dean of the Medical Faculty at the University of Maribor, Prof. Ivan Krajnc, wishes to achieve a good reputation of his Faculty in Europe.
