Professional career
After studying medicine in Munich, I started my postgraduate training for Medical Microbiology, Virology and Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases at the Pettenkofer-Institute in Munich. For clinical parts of this training I spent half a year at the department of nephrology and haemodialysis at the Klinikum in Ingolstadt and one year in the Medizinische Klinik Innenstadt of the LMU.
Since 1989, I am Consultant Microbiologist and one of the supervisors of the diagnostic laboratory for viral diseases.
My research was focused on genetic variability of HIV (coinventor of HIV-1/O), antiviral therapy and mechanisms of viral resistance.
Since 1997, I was part of the Munich Harvard Alliance (MHA) for Medical Education, as director of the course on Infectious Diseases and Immunlogy (IKI). As a member of the organizing committee of MeCuMLMU (Medical Curriculum Munich), I am responsible for the first clinical half year term, called Modul 1.
Teaching interest
Member of multiple training programs of the MHA for Medical Education for faculty members (Frauenchiemsee, Dresden, Leipzig).
Interested in:
- defining optimized conditions for teaching and learning,
- how to preserve/recover the inborn curiosity of the learner,
- defining meaningful examinations.
Research interest
Virus evolution under selective pressure of the immune system and of antiviral therapy. Improvement of detection systems for viral infections.
Personal interest
Acquiring knowledge and skills, playing music, philosophy.
